📄 Certified Copies
State law does not authorize a notary to certify a copy of your document. Only the person to whom the document was issued can certify in a written statement that a photocopy is a true copy — signatories then obtain notarization under oath. For some documents, an original custodian (e.g., a school registrar) must sign the statement in the presence of a notary. ARTSA’s on-call and online notary is available for this.
🚫 Documents That Cannot Be Notarized
Vital records — birth certificates, death certificates, marriage/divorce certificates — court documents, company registration records, and FBI background checks cannot be notarized by a notary public. Submitting a notarized version of these documents will lead to rejection. (One exception: vital records from New Hampshire must be notarized before sending for apostille.)
